Saba Javar – A Contemporary Iranian Dance

I HAVE ESCAPED FROM….رستم از اين… – صبا جاور
Drawing on traditions of verbally delivered rhythmic modes in dance (Kathak for example) the highly-creative Javar creates a slightly absurd yet compelling scenario in which everyday objects, even rubbish, become the totemic co-deliverers of an increasingly frantic rhythm to imploring, progressively desperate lyrics. At times bird-like and fragile at others knowing and skeleton-like, Javar’s voodoo approach to chant and dance has a certain power, especially the spurring development to a climax and her subsequent mute matchbox rattling at the end. This lonely, rhythmic and yet irregular dance, with its reverberant and raw soundtrack, demands viewing.
