A1one is one of the better known street artists in Iran’s capital, along with Artists such as Icy and Sot and GhalamDAR and others. There is a strong presence of Iranian graffiti art culture that has grown up without need of state permission, with it’s own innovative language and symbolism calling on Persian calligraphic tradition, the influence of Banksy and his forerunner Blek le Rat. Street art in Tehran demonstrates the innovative nature that has internationally come to characterise Iranian contemporary arts, “siah-mashq,” an essential element of traditional calligraphic education, is about patiently copying the blueprint your calligraphy master, and these graffiti artists generally do but with a new and individual twist. Really though Iranians are most innovative at getting around censorship. In that, both via state approved and unapproved art forms, they will always be number A1.
