Clearly influenced by M.I.A., young Nadya takes the visual, musical and verbal language of American rap and creates her own, self aware – in that it takes itself lightly at times – music. The Sweden-based singer made the footage in Iran, and edited it back home. Although the concept is stretched slightly thin at times and completely Swedish facing (and that’s a conversation that needs to be had, earlier interviews with Swedish-Iranian artists reveal how hard it is to be an ‘outsider’ in Sweden), there’s plenty of potential here and some sharp scenes shot and spliced together. Considering this is the first major thing she’s made, what will she put her mind to next.
