Currently Listening to…Heavy Makeup feat. Sharjarian

Lyrics from the great Sufi poet Rumi, vicals by Sharjarian, but who made the funky video play on Persian miniatures and added the heavy metal elements? The son of a Persian musical legend Mohammadreza Shajarian, the grand master vocalist of Persian traditional music, Homayoun Shajarian has forged his own career, by bringing his youthful nature to this ancient tradition. A master vocalist in the Persian classical, he also plays tombak (goblet drum) and kamancheh (spiked fiddle).

Here in this video a Rumi poem, sung by Shajarian and Sohrab Pournazeri, from the album Arayesh-E Ghaliz, features animation by Iman Yari, Vahid Sadeghi, M. Shahmoradi, Idin Gheshlaghi and Homan Hasani. Miniatures by the likes of Mir Sayyid Ali (Tabriz, 1510–1572) come alive in today’s Iran.
