On this week’s Six Pillars an audio collage of field recordings taken from a visa run to the very nearby Sultanate of Oman from Dubai, a round trip made in 4 hours. Our main feature is an interview with Emirati Hind Mezaina, an established artist and blogger in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates of some Egyptian descent. Hind has been writing under the name The Culturist for many years. She is also a practising artist using her own photography – also expanded into print and other forms of photography- found footage, and recently video and installation to convey her ideas.
We speak to Hind about what motivated her to become the cultural commentator and reviewer she is, of arts and culture in Dubai and international film festivals.
Hind has twice been a Global Art Fellow for Art Dubai, the largest art fair in the Middle East, and was a commissioned artist in residence at Art Dubai 2015. She is currently a fellow at the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (SEAF) on a one year intensive residency with academic support, followed by a potential year’s MA funded study abroad. Her photographs have been exhibited in group shows in Dubai, London, Tokyo, Berlin and New York.
You are likely to see Hind talking on panels, presenting film screenings or exhibiting her photography across the UAE and beyond. For example she most recently moderated a talk with film director Nawaf Al Janahi about the Emirati film industry at the Apple Store in Dubai and in the past has spoken on photography at Gulf Photo Plus here. Having been cataloguing and reviewing cultural events in the UAE since the relatively new term ‘blogger’ even entered our language, she’s now on the verge of a different phase as her photography and arts practice receives an immeasurable boost.
Either side of the interview, tense moments discussing nationality, locality and possibility with complete strangers on the mountainous road to and from Oman.
Broadcasts Wednesdays 9pm repeats the following Fridays 3.30pm GMT (4 hours ahead of GST).
