“Art communication and critique, is there any arts journalism here?”
This week it’s all about art critique (NB not necessarily criticism) and street art made for exhibition within the gallery setting. We hear from guest writer Kevin Jones, an independent arts critic and writer based 10 years in the Middle East, on the challenges of critiquing in a country more habituated to puff pieces and reprints of press releases. We also hear from Rom Levy, founder and Editor in Chief of Street Art News, and curator of the current 100% specially commissioned works on show in Between the Lines an urban contemporary art exhibition currently at The Mine in Al Quoz Dubai.
Kevin Jones is the UAE Desk Editor for ArtAsiaPacific, contributing to The ArtNewspaper, Artforum.com, ArtReviewAsia and FlashArt International, Bidoun, Canvas Magazine, Brownbook and The National newspaper.
“I am a self-proclaimed critic of contemporary cultural production, specifically visual art. Living in a place where cultural criticism has little currency, I have created a parallel space where I can exert my critical eye and raise my voice for a more widespread culture of criticism that goes beyond thumbs up/thumbs down.” Kevin Jones.
Writer and commentator Kevin Jones features as a guest segment 4/4 on art scenes in the UAE, produced by Wael Hattar and Hind Mezaina.
