Today on Six Pillars sounds from the Frieze Art fair, with support from Iranian artist Shirin Fathi, we speak to Gypsum Gallery Cairo presenting a performance by Mahmoud Khaled, Proyectos Ultravioleta from Guatemala with mother daughter duo Elisabeth Wild and Vivian Suter who are based in Lake Atitlán – a mythically significant lake in Guatemala in between three volcanoes.(and who also won one of the Stand prizes at Frieze), artist Robbie Walters of London wearing one of his own works, Jan Kaps Gallery, Cologne, Project 88 Mumbai with Neha Choksi, Anthony Reynolds Gallery UK with a 90s show by seminal photographer Richard Billingham and finally A Gentil Carioca from Rio da Janero about their stand by artist collective Opavivara! at Frieze Art Fair.
Opavivara! are an art collective from Rio de Janeiro, which develops actions in public spaces of the city, galleries and cultural institutions, proposing inversions in the use of urban space, through the creation of relational devices that provide collective experiences.
Neha Choksi (b. 1973, USA) is a Mumbai and Los Angeles based artist whose oeuvre presents a materially bound search for and acceptance of absences and emptyings.
We’ll leave more from Frieze Art Fair in the coming shows, next week we hear from Sote, the Iranian producer who is in London to perform at Cafe Oto on October 15th. Find out more about our MENASA travels in sound on Facebook and twitter @6Pillars.
