Announcing a 4 part, monthly series on early and contemporary radio landscapes in the United Arab Emirates, in conjunction with Sharjah Art Foundation, Resonance104.4FM and Clocktower Radio in NYC, USA.
‘The Far Becomes Near’ is a four part radio series creatively archiving the early history of radio broadcasting in the United Arab Emirates, from before the UAE’s formation to the current radio landscape.
Commissioned by the Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, the programmes are radiophonic experiments punctuated by interviews with local historians, academics, cultural commentators and the federation’s earliest broadcasters. While the works mention places and dates, this series reimagines the documentary in an almost theatrical manner, with each episode imaginatively exploring a different form. Sound artists Fari Bradley and Chris Weaver treat the interviews as threads, weaving a radiophonic story as each distinct episode unfolds.

A future transmission to the present day, of an archived audio database of oral histories within living memory of the beginnings of radio transmission in the Arabian Peninsula. Today’s ‘recent’ history is observed and catalogued by civilisations of another millennium, who send the archive back to today as a missive from tomorrow. The archive of early memories are primary, secondary and tertiary sources, describing a Gulf tuned in to a world outside.
