Six Pillars Broadcast: London Palestine Film Festival

The London Palestine Film Festival (LPFF) returns after a two year haitus, with diverse, rare and popular shorts, features and documentaries, working to connect audiences with international filmmakers focusing on Palestine-related issues.

Joining the likes of Bella Freud and Eyal Weizman for the festival are this week’s Six Pillars’ guests (bios below): Mai Masri with 3000 Nights, about the many Palestinians born in prison; Azza El Hassan discussing five restored films from Palestine’s revolutionary era at the ICA and Kamal Aljafari and his experimental film Recollection; around which he is giving workshops at London’s Barbican.

Mai Masri
Mai Masri will be in conversation with author and academic Dr. Adania Shibli following a screening of the film 3000 Nights. The film was inspired by the stories of the many Palestinians who were born in prison, following the journey of a newlywed Palestinian schoolteacher who is falsely arrested and incarcerated in an Israeli prison where she gives birth to her son. Her event is taking place on 21st November at Curzon Soho.

Azza El Hassan
Azza El Hassan will be part of a panel alongside Dr. Anandi Ramamurthy and Bashar Shammout, in discussion about five different films from Palestine’s revolutionary era following their screening. The restorations of the films is a part of a project called Creative Interruptions which seeks to explore the way artists have used creativity to give voice to the oppressed. Her event is taking place 20th November at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.
 
Kamal Aljafari
Kamal Aljafari will be conducting a masterclass followed by a screening of his experimental film Recollection. He will be in conversation afterwards with Eyal Weizman about his technically challenging and visually poetic films which resurrects memories of the Jaffa he grew up in. His masterclass will be at SOAS followed by the screening of his film at the Barbican Centre on Sunday 18th November.
